Travel Guide: Visit the Three Gorges Dam with Kids — A National Mega Project Tour

Learn about China’s world-famous water conservancy project and stunning river scenery

Have you heard about the massive Yarlung Tsangpo Hydropower Project? With a total investment of around 1.2 trillion yuan, it can generate over 300 billion kWh of electricity every year. Comparing it with the Three Gorges Dam I visited with my kids during winter vacation, I truly admire China’s remarkable infrastructure strength. The Three Gorges Dam cost about 248.5 billion yuan and produces roughly 100 billion kWh of power annually.

Today I’m sharing a complete travel guide to the Three Gorges Dam. Bring your children here to experience the grandeur of this great engineering marvel. I also look forward to the day when the Yarlung Tsangpo Hydropower Station opens to visitors, so we can witness another incredible national wonder.

Tour Routes

Group tours are required to visit the Three Gorges Dam, and there are two classic routes: Bus in, Cruise out or Cruise in, Bus out. I chose the bus-in and cruise-out route, detailed as below:

  1. Arrive at the Three Gorges Dam first. Explore Tanziling Viewpoint, 185 Platform and River Closure Memorial Park. You will fully understand the greatness of this giant project.
  2. After lunch, board the cruise ship to sail along Xiling Gorge. Enjoy breathtaking river landscapes and feel proud of the amazing natural views.
  3. Watch ships pass through the Gezhouba Dam locks. It is an impressive sight to see vessels queuing and going through the water gates.

Useful Tips for Traveling with Kids

  • Do some basic research about the dam beforehand. It helps kids learn and understand more during the tour.
  • Bring some snacks. Group tours include lunch, but extra food is always handy for children.
  • Prepare sunscreen. The sunlight by the river is strong and you can easily get sunburned.
